De Soto sits on the bluffs above the Kansas River at the west end of the county, and the town changes character in about six blocks. Down near the river and along Lexington Avenue the houses are old and low, small frame homes and bungalows with simple front gables and porches. Up on the higher ground south of K-10, the new subdivisions are steep two-story fronts with tall entry gables and stone accents. Those upper peaks are the ones people cannot reach from their own ladder. Tree cover is thick along the river bottom and thin in the new sections, which changes how much light a house actually needs.
