Christmas Light Takedown and Storage in Kansas: How to Do It Right
January takedown is colder and riskier than the install. How to get lights down safely, store them so they still work next year, and when to skip it.

Everybody plans the install. Almost nobody plans the takedown.
That is backwards, because January is the harder half of the job. The roof is colder, the footing is worse, the daylight is shorter, and the motivation is gone. It is also the part that decides whether your lights work next December or go in the trash.
Why January takedown is riskier than the November install
In October and early November, a Johnson County roof is usually dry, above freezing, and reachable in good light. Shingles flex. Gutters are clear. You can see what you are doing.
In January, none of that holds. Overnight ice can sit on a north-facing slope for days after the south side has dried. Asphalt shingles get brittle when they are cold, so the same clip you slid under a shingle in November can crack it coming out in January. Ladder feet slide on frozen ground and on the frost that forms on a driveway after sundown. And it gets dark around five, which pushes the work into a two-hour window on a weekend afternoon.
There is one more thing that catches people. The cord itself stiffens in the cold. A run that coiled easily in the fall goes rigid, resists the reel, and takes a set if you force it into a tight bend. Bends taken while frozen are where cords crack.
Pick a warm-ish day and wait for the ice
The single best decision you can make is to not do this on the first free Saturday. Do it on the first day above freezing with a dry roof.
Kansas City gives you those days in January. We swing 30 degrees in 48 hours regularly. A 45-degree afternoon in mid-January is a normal thing here, and it is worth waiting two weeks for. Cold, dry, and above freezing beats mild and wet — a damp roof at 38 degrees is more slippery than a dry one at 28.
Start on the south side. It dries first.
Getting them down without damage
Work the same direction you installed. Release each clip individually rather than pulling the cord and letting the clips come off however they want. A cord pulled hard from below will strip clips off in sequence, and a stripped clip usually takes a piece of shingle lip with it or snaps and stays wedged under the shingle.
Lift the shingle lip slightly, slide the clip out, and drop the clip in a bucket. Count them if you plan to reuse them. Coil the cord loosely as you go rather than letting fifty feet of it hang off the roof edge — a hanging run pulls on the clips still attached and turns one slip into a whole side coming down at once.
Get every clip. A clip left on the roof through a Kansas summer sits in direct sun at attic-adjacent temperatures, goes brittle, and eventually cracks and blows into the yard or the gutter. Same for staples if you inherited a house that had them — a leftover staple is a rusting hole in your fascia, which is a large part of why we never use staples or nails in the first place.
Storing so the set works next year
Storage is where most homeowner light sets die. Not on the roof, in the garage.
Here is the short version of doing it right:
- Test before you store, not after. Plug each run in on the ground and look for dead sections while you still remember which side of the house it came from. A run you know is bad is a run you replace in September instead of discovering at 4pm the day after Thanksgiving.
- Wind loosely, never fold. A reel, a spool, or a rectangle of cardboard all work. Tight coils and hard folds stress the cord where the wire enters each socket, and that joint is where failures start.
- Label by location. "Front gutter," "garage peak," "east side." Custom-cut runs are only fast to reinstall if you know where each one goes.
- Store cool, dry and off the floor. A lidded bin on a shelf. Not a cardboard box on concrete, which wicks moisture, and ideally not the attic, which in a Kansas July gets hot enough to shorten the life of both the cord jacket and the LED drivers.
- Bag the clips separately. Clips in with the cord means clips lost by next October.
That is the whole method. It is not complicated, it just has to actually happen in January while you are cold and want to be inside.
The case for not doing it yourself
DIY install is a reasonable choice for a single-story ranch with a walkable front. DIY takedown on a two-story with peaks in January is a different proposition, and it is worth being clear-eyed about it. Roughly speaking, most of the serious ladder trouble in this trade happens in winter takedown conditions rather than during a mild fall install — cold hands, short days, and ice are the reason.
There is also the storage math. If you own the lights, you are storing them, replacing dead runs, and re-buying clips every few years. Over time that adds up in both money and garage space, and the set degrades whether you use it or not.

If your installer disappeared
It happens, particularly with crews that only exist for one season. If a company put lights on your house in November and stopped answering the phone in January, you have two problems: lights on the roof and an unclear question of who owns them.
Practically, you either take them down yourself in a safe window or hire someone to. Takedown-only work is available in Overland Park, Leawood, Olathe, Lenexa, Shawnee and the rest of the Kansas side of the metro. It is worth asking about in the same message as a quote for next season, because a crew already coming to your address is the cheapest way to solve it.
Do not leave them up until spring hoping it resolves. Every extra month is more UV on the cord, more freeze-thaw on the clips, and a higher chance a run comes loose in a March windstorm and drags across the gutter.
